AMHERST, NY - Bryant & Stratton College and WGRZ-TV are proud to announce Kristen Melohusky, 23, of West Seneca, NY as the August winner in The Great Give Back 2013.
Volunteering for Skating Athletes Bold at Heart for the last eight years, Melohusky, who has Mild Cerebral Palsy, was a "SABAH Star" for 11 years before deciding to give back to the organization that first gave to her.
In her nomination, Melohusky wrote:
"SABAH has given my life a sense of meaning and purpose. To me, it's rewarding knowing that I can make a difference in someone else's life, even if it's only while they're skating. I have become more patient and compassionate towards individuals with special needs. Each week, from October to March, I put on my skates and provide the love, encouragement, and support, for skaters who are determined to try in spite of the obstacles they face. I serve as a role model to the skaters and I provide a safe learning environment for them. The interactions between the SABAH Stars and volunteers teach everyone lessons both on and off the ice. Knowing that I have helped others to believe in themselves is evident in the smiles on their faces as they skate, radiating confidence, in the annual ice show. Their own courage and determination are an inspiration to me."
SABAH is an organization whose mission is to challenge individuals with special needs to experience the success, pride, freedom and joy of therapeutic ice-skating while achieving personal growth.
It is clear that Kristen Melohusky is a true example of an individual who treasures giving back to her community and it is for this reason that Bryant & Stratton College and WGRZ-TV have named her the August winner in The Great Give Back 2013. Bryant & Stratton College has also graciously donated $1,000 to SABAH.
