The 2 Pack a Backpack drive starts this Friday at many area Walmart locations. We will be broadcasting live at the Williamsville Walmart starting at 6 a.m. Friday. The Boys and Girls Club tells us that 4,000 to 6,000 children will get the school supplies they need this year thanks to generous donations to the school supply drive. A club administrator also told us that many back-to-school supply lists can contain $100 worth of items per student.

Tonight, I sat down with a Buffalo mother of three to talk about the stress buying all of those supplies can cause. She told me that it's difficult getting her kids out the door in the morning with everything they need, and the financial burden placed upon her family by the school supply lists that come out every year is tough.

I was curious, so I found the Buffalo Public Schools Supply List for the 2013-14 school year. When I was in school, I remember having to go out to get pencils, pens, notebooks, binders, etc. Now schools want you to bring 3 boxes of tissues, cleaning supplies and wipes. Kindergarteners need to bring $28.00 with them on the first day of school to pay for school supplies for the classroom in Buffalo. It just shows you how times have changed. I wonder if some districts have students bring in toilet paper and soap for the bathroom to share.

It must be stressful for parents who have trouble paying the bills to also have to spend this much on school supplies. And, think about what it must be like for children who can't afford the supplies to show up without them. It's great to know that so many people out there will help out so that kids won't have to go through that and can show up with backpacks filled with what they need. Thank you!
