BUFFALO, NY - When Jeff Aichinger turned 50 a few weeks ago, he knew he didn't want to celebrate with a big party or gifts -- at least no gifts for himself.

Instead the Akron resident decided he wanted to raise money for an organization that he has been a part of since childhood.

"A lot of people have the thought that Boys and Girls clubs are not much more than a big basketball group, and nothing could be farther from the truth.  There are education opportunities, life skills opportunity here, character development, and social development," said Aichinger.

He and his wife donated $2500 -- $50 for each of his 50 years -- and he pledged 50 hours of volunteer time with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Buffalo.

Aichinger is hoping other Western New Yorkers will follow his lead and donate time or money.

So far the effort, which he dubbed "50 Years and One Project," has raised nearly $5000 for the Boys and Girls Clubs.

Donations will benefit the Food and Nutrition Program at the clubs, which provides more than 1,000 nutritious meals and snacks to club members each day.

There's also an education component where parents of club members can learn more about healthy eating and cooking.

"There is the ability to get a good healthy meal which unfortunately some kids don't get at home," said Aichinger.
