Experts say new, costly breast cancer screening tests may not improve detection.

A new study out of Yale University looked at more than one hundred thousand women receiving medicare, and found the most expensive tests did not detect advanced cancers better than older, cheaper tests.

hey also found over four hundred million dollars were spent on screening for women over age seventy-five -- a group that government advisors said may not benefit from testing.

Medicare spent between $40 - $110 per female beneficiary for breast cancer screening. the difference in cost was due to newer tests that were used in higher-cost areas.
