90-percent of children with two specific gene markers ... and who were prone to wheezing when they caught a cold ... developed asthma by the age of six.

in fact, these kids were almost four times as likely to develop asthma as those without the genetic markers and did not wheeze.

researchers aren't sure how the genes and virus interact to cause asthma ... but suggest pediatricians find ways to prevent wheezing in young children with the asthma genes.
