Sleep helps us function, fend off sickness ... and now scientists believe it can help calm our fears.

Through a series of experiments that used odors to trigger unpleasant memories, researchers found that by repeatedly exposing fearful memories to people as they slept, their fears were diminished.

This sleep exposure therapy could be a good treatment for phobias and post traumatic stress disorder ... because patients are faced with a fear or bad memory ... when they aren't aware of the process.

More studies are needed to see if this method would be effective long-term ... and if it would work with pre-existing fear memories instead of those created in a lab.
