YOUNGSTOWN, N.Y. - The Lancaster baseball team scored the winning run in the top of the seventh inning to rally past top seeded Niagara Falls 2-1 and win the Section VI Class AA baseball title.
It's the first Section VI title win for the Redskins (16-4) since 2000. "It shows the kids if you work hard and have high character, it pays off, " said Lancaster head coach Mark Dalfonso. "We have something special here."
The Wolverines jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a squeeze bunt by #22 Kyle O'Shea that brought home #9 Michael Gabriele.
Lancaster would finally break onto the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single by #15 Ryan Stekl to tie the game at 1-1.
In the top of the seventh inning, Ted Wilson would give the Redskins the lead, as he ripped an RBI single into right field to score #21 Ben Haefner. Wilson finished the game 2-4 at the plate, he was also the starting pitcher for Lancaster, giving up the one-run in five innings of work.
Haefner led the Redskins going 3-4 for the game.
"This is huge, absolutely huge," said Lancaster assistant coach Derek Jozwiak. "All the hard work paid off."
Lancaster advances to the Far West Regionals next Tuesday at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia.
