BATAVIA, NY - Troopers say a man was drunk behind the wheel and led officers on a chase lasting more than 40 miles.

Investigators say it began around 10:40 Monday night when a trooper observed a Buick LeSabre going more than 100mph westbound on the Thruway between Depew and Pembroke.

When the trooper tried to pull the car over, the driver sped up and continued to drive erratically. Just before he reached the Williamsville toll barrier, he made a U-turn and went eastbound with troopers still in pursuit.

As he reached the Batavia interchange, officers deployed spike strips which left all four of the car's tires flat. Despite this, the driver exited at Batavia and still drove on. After passing through the toll barrier, he rammed a trooper's car not once but twice.

Troopers finally managed to stop the car in Batavia with the assistance of Batavia Police and sheriff's deputies.

The driver's name is not being released at this time but investigators say he is 42 years-old and from the City of Batavia. He's charged with DWI, reckless endangerment and numerous other traffic violations. No officers were hurt during the chase.
