BUFFALO, NY - A local developer has won an early approval from the city of Buffalo to move forward in building a collegiate residential community. The $40 million dollar housing plan could be a big boost to the area and a benefit for the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus where the UB Medical school will be located in the future.

Legacy development already owns much of the property on LaSalle Avenue between Main and Cordova that it needs to build market rate, multi-family rental townhomes and apartments. The president of the company tells 2 On Your Side, they need an additional 4.7 acres that is owned by the city to finish off their project. The Buffalo Common Council gave Legacy designated developer for the land.

The housing will target college students, especially University at Buffalo medical students who would be within walking distance to the LaSalle metro rail station which can take them right to the medical campus near the Allen Street station.

Plans are in the very early stages, but Frank Chinnici, president of Legacy thinks the housing will be "somewhere in the vicinity of 250-units."

"This is an urban development, it's a much different style of development and so it will not look like Autumn Creek," an Amherst apartment complex that Legacy built, " it will look like an urban-based multi-family residential project."

Buffalo Common Councilmember Bonnie Russell represents the University District. It is "a positive thing and I'm glad that the neighborhoods are happy," she said.

The William Price Parkway sub-division is right behind where the apartments will be built. It is a sub-division of higher priced homes filled with working class families and some retirees.

"Our project will have 24/7 on site management which is something we think is a benefit to the neighborhood because we're going to be a well maintained property with a lot of eyeballs in it and that's a good thing for the neighborhood," said Chinnici.

WUFO radio is located on LaSalle Avenue. The station that is over 50-years old is in the process of looking for a new home. The developer purchased the land where their station has been since the 1960's.
