An experimental drug to treat the severe social withdrawal and challenging behaviors of fragile x syndrome may also be effective for autism patients.

Researchers at Rush University and the University of California, davis's "mind" institute studied 56 patients with fragile x -- ranging in age from 6 to 39 years old.

The drug -- called STX 209 -- was able to improve the participants ability to interact socially... and improved many problematic behaviors associated with fragile x.

Researchers are hopeful it may also someday treat social and behavior problems associated with autism.
