more and more grandparents have become caregivers for their grandchildren ... but many aren't aware of recent safety guidelines.

a new study finds about half of grandparent caregivers did not know infants should be placed on their backs to sleep -- or that crib blankets, bumpers and stuffed animals were potential suffocation hazards.

a quarter weren't aware that children should stay in a rear-facing car seat until the age of two.

and 75-percent thought infant walkers were acceptable ... although pediatricians have warned parents to get rid of them because of safety concerns.
