BUFFALO, NY - Funeral arrangements are now set for a beloved teacher who died on an overseas school trip earlier this week.
Sarah Acton, a high school Spanish teacher, was accompanying students from the Tapestry Charter School on a trip to Costa Rica when she suffered from a "medical emergency" a week ago Monday, according to school leaders.
Calling Hours will take place today, April 1st and tomorrow, April 2nd from 1:00pm-4:00pm and 6:00pm-9:00pm at the Lester Wedekindt Funeral Home, 3290 Delaware Avenue in Kenmore.
The funeral service has been moved to Zion United Church of Christ on Koenig Blvd. in Tonawanda on Wednesday April 3rd to accommodate the large number of people expected to attend.
The students who were on the trip came back to WNY on Wednesday.
Mrs. Acton was described as a dedicated, caring and loving educator who was a member of the Tapestry community for more than five years.
School personnel will be made available to students and staff who need attention and support during this difficult time. The school intends to maintain as normal a routine and structure for the students as possible and is encouraging families to do the same.
The school will also be preparing a celebration of Mrs. Acton's life to be held sometime after the April break.
A scholarship fund has been set up in Acton's name. You can send a donation to the Sarah Thorp Acton Scholarship Fund c/o Tapestry Charter School, 65 Great Arrow Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14216.
