Buffalo, NY- The terror attack at the Boston Marathon has state, local, and federal officials taking extra precautions for the upcoming Buffalo Marathon which takes place on Sunday.
Seven thousand people will take part. Runners will come in from all over the country and the world to tackle the 26 point 2 mile course along with the half marathon. That course covers many city neighborhoods and areas but the Buffalo Convention Center is the registration point and site for the post race party and events.
Marathon director John Beishline says that in a meeting with federal officials and local police it was agreed that packages and backpacks will not be allowed inside the convention center. Also some items like fanny packs or bags could be inspected. Security may also request that racing jackets be unzipped to make sure there are no security risks.
In addition the Erie County Sheriff's Marine unit will have their boats stationed off shore along the portion of the race in Lasalle Park along the river. The sheriff's Air One helicopter will monitor activity from the air.
Buffalo police did say they will have plenty of officers checking the crowd as well. Today they did showcase their summer bike patrols which could be involved as well.
