ALDEN, NY - Teachers at Alden Middle School could never fully explain why three students had to experience such heartache because of cancer.

Erin Matthewson, 11, twice battled a type of soft tissue cancer in her eye.

At the same time, Erin's classmate, Alyssa Sigurdson, and her older brother Andrew watched the disease slowly take their mother from them.

Tammy Sigurdson died of brain cancer back in January after a two year battle.

Fifth grade teacher Patti Mooney wanted to do something to support her students, so she started a Ride for Roswell team.  She hoped for a handful of participants, but her group quickly grew.  The support from all students was tremendous.

Erin, who just finished her last chemotherapy treatment, will be riding along with Alyssa.  Andrew will be volunteering at the ride and cheering on participants.
