LACKAWANNA, NY - The Catholic faithful gathered in Lackawanna today to mark yet another year since the passing of a central figure in the local church.
They came to Our Lady of Victory Basilica in Lackawanna to honor the tradition of caring which Father Baker Nelson established as they seek his eternal recognition at the Vatican.
It was a procession to mark the anniversary of the death of Father Nelson Baker in 1937. And as the church community took part in the service at OLV members of Father Baker's extended family were on hand as well.
"People grew up here on the property as orphans, and so it brings all those people back together," said Monsignor Paul Burkard. "It's kind of a nice reunion day to remember Father Baker and all the things he did when he was alive and they were here."
And there are prayers and hopes the Vatican will recognize those good works in a saintly role for this revered figure who is currently known as "Venerable Nelson Baker."
