CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Carolina coach Ron Rivera says he still has confidence in third-year cornerback (and UB alum) Josh Thomas and will stick with him as a starter this Sunday when the Panthers visit the Buffalo Bills.

Thomas surrendered the decisive 43-yard touchdown pass to Seattle wide receiver Jermaine Kearse in the fourth quarter of Carolina's 12-7 loss to the Seahawks in the season opener.

But Rivera says "there's no reason in my opinion to panic or to get him off the field," adding that "he's young, he's learning and he's gaining experience."

Thomas, who has started five career NFL games, says his goal is to become one of the top five cornerbacks in the league by the end of the season and isn't about to let one mistake deter him from reaching that goal.
