The state Education Department's EngageNY website is directing people with tech support problems to a phone number with an engagement of a different kind.
Instead of help logging on, people who call the number are greeted with a perky female voice announcing, "Welcome to America's hottest talk line! Ladies, press one to talk to interesting and exciting guys. Guys press two to talk to hot ladies!"
EngageNY is the state's go-to site for all things Common Core. Teachers, administrators and parents are directed there to get specifics about which subjects are taught at which grade and see examples of lesson plans. It gets high ratings from those who use it.
However, when a local administrator accessed it Thursday morning to sign up for the mandated parent portal site and had to get a tech support number, the one he was directed to wasn't what he had expected.
Tom Dunn, a spokesmen for the state Education Department, said they had taken the site down as soon as they were alerted to it and were investigating how it happened. The place on the site where the issue occurred, he said, is for school officials and not generally accessible to the public.
