BUFFALO, NY-- A Buffalo man was arraigned Wednesday on charges that he allegedly raped and murdered a 13-year-old girl.
Darshawn Morris, 21, is accused of raping Lanasha Rollerson, and then stabbed her to death on September 1. Her body was found dumped behind Morris' home. Police say she had sneaked out of her family home and attended a party with friends at Morris' home in the early morning hours.
Morris was indicted on formal charges of second degree murder, second degree rape, and second degree criminal sexual act. A woman who identified herself as his mother told reporters that she is devastated and constantly crying because of what occurred. His attorney Emily Trott also said her client feels terrible and upset that he would be presumed guily before all information comes out. She would not elaborate. Trott also would not discuss any possible insanity or dimished capacity defense for Morris.
Police said Morris was arrested following treatment at ECMC and made a statement about the crime.
If convicted, Morris could face life in prison if convicted. Justice William Boller set an early March date for a possible trial.
