ALBANY The New York State Master Teacher Program will accept applications from six additional state regions, which completes the program's expansion plans, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Monday.

The program was expanded to include applications from the Finger Lakes, Mohawk Valley, Capitol Region, Long Island, and the Southern Tier, and New York City regions, making the program available in every region statewide.

The Mid-Hudson, North Country, Central New York, and Western New York regions were added earlier in the fall.

"With this second round of applications for the New York State Master Teacher Program, we are opening up this initiative to outstanding teachers from all ten regions of the state who go beyond their basic duties to help their students succeed," Cuomo said in a statement.

The Master Teacher program was created earlier this year to promote and reward science, technology, engineering, and math teachers in the state.

Master teachers receive a $15,000 grant per year over four years while they peer-mentor other teachers, work with early career teachers, and attend regular meetings and participate in and lead professional development activities.

"Securing and supporting our teaching workforce is essential as New York rebuilds its economy and prepares today's children for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century," State University of New York Chancellor Nancy Zimpher said in a statement. "The Master Teacher program gives the best and brightest teachers added incentive to keep educating and to share their knowledge and expertise with their peers."

Last month, the program announced 104 master teachers accepted into the program. Up to 561 teachers across the state will be selected in the second round of applications.

Applications are due by Jan. 3.
