Google is taking its Street View camera farther off roads thanks to this unique device.

How far off the beaten path?

How about the Grand Canyon for starters.

"Street View is more than just the public streets that people might be most familiar with. We actually take Street View to a huge variety of places based on where our users want to go and the type of places they want to see," says Ryan Falor, Google product manager.

Street View has been around since 2007, but that was just in five cities. Now, it's on every continent and uses much better equipment.

"So we've got on the top the primary camera, which has got 15 actual 5-megapixel cameras generating 75 megapixels of raw imagery. Beneath that is the camera control boards that process all those pixels and write them down into our main computer," says Falor.

The cameras are so advanced the person carrying it can run up to 25 miles per hour and still produce sharp images.

However, weighing in at 40 pounds and standing four feet high these engineers say it's best to take it on an easy stroll, so they can enjoy the views too.
