PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia transit officials say an old-fashioned but vital piece of safety equipment helped avert disaster when a stroller carrying a toddler fell onto train tracks.

Surveillance video shows a woman on the platform with the girl in a joggling stroller, which slowly rolled toward the eastbound track and toppled over.

The stroller came to rest on the outer rail, which carried no charge. The woman is seen jumping down and lifting the baby to a man waiting on the platform.

An alert passenger at the west Philadelphia station used a call box to notify the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority about the emergency Wednesday afternoon.

Other passengers ran to help and one alerted SEPTA police, who stopped an incoming train at another stop.

The child was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for treatment of a cut on her forehead.
