Burying your nose in a good book -- or spending the morning working on a crossword puzzle -- could keep you mentally sharp in old age.

Researchers at Rush University studied nearly three hundred older adults for six years -- then examined their brain tissue after they died.

Each participant was given tests to measure their memory and thinking, and were surveyed about brain-boosting activities they participated in during their lifetime.

They found people who did not include brain teasers -- like reading and puzzles -- in their daily life experienced mental decline fifty percent faster than those with average activity.

The study showed participating in mentally stimulating tasks early and late in life could significantly slow mental decline.
