BUFFALO, N.Y. - The blades are cutting, the pucks are flying and nerves are mixed with excitement as the 2013-2014 Buffalo Sabres training camp is officially underway.
There are 60 players in camp this year, all fighting for a spot on that final 23-man roster. Head Coach Ron Rolston is working the players through in three "teams" of 20.
On day one, the blue team worked the first ice session, a series of puck possession, passing and edgework drills. Rolston says today was mainly to get the players hands working and blades wet, it was also a chance for the coaching staff to get a better gage on how prepared the players.
After the blue team went off, the gray and gold teams squared off in a scrimmage. Team gold winning 2-0 on goals from Johan Larrson and Justin Kea.
One thing was clear, the fans are happy the team is back as about 50 people watched the first day of workouts.
