Buffalo, NY - It's an issue every community faces, how to help older residents stay in their homes. For a community in Buffalo, one solution is to create a village of volunteers to help.

Canopy of Neighbors is an nonprofit organization where members can call with a need, and Canopy of neighbors finds a volunteer-first to help.

Executive Director Sandra Sheppard explains,"That's everything from flipping your mattress, changing your light bulb, batteries in your smoke detector twice a year, a trip to a medical appointment... to get groceries... all those little things that get more difficult as you get older, but don't necessarily have to be a reason why you give up your home or go into assisted living or a nursing home."

Canopy of Neighbors is available to people who live in the 14209 and 14222 zip codes.

It gives volunteers a way to share their expertise while strengthening the community, and those helped are grateful.

Canopy of Neighbors is always looking for volunteers.
They are planning an open house at their new office at 805 Delaware Avenue in Buffalo on Thursday, October 10th from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m.
