Toboggan Runs in 1931
ORCHARD PARK, NY-County leaders cut the ribbons Friday as a traditional winter activity at Chestnut Ridge Park is in the chutes and ready to make another run for fun and thrills.
The Erie County Parks Department and County Executive Chris Collins declared the newly refurbished toboggan runs at the park ready for business and ready to open today.
The runs were closed five years ago when the county determined there were too many wear and tear and safety issues for the structures which dated back to the 1930s.
Parks Commissioner James Hornung said back then it would cost more than $100,000 for repairs and at that point the county could not afford to do so.
The repairs actually totalled about $175,000, paid for through the county's capital bonding funds.
But now that work on the paint, structures, and steps has been completed for the runs to be used once again. They will be open Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 10am-4pm.
