BUFFALO, N.Y.- The Corn Refiners Association is responding to a lawsuit filed by an Amherst mother claiming high fructose corn syrup gave her teenage daughter type 2 diabetes.
The $5 million lawsuit blames the makers of corn syrup for making the girl sick.
The group representing the manufacturers claims the plaintiff's lead expert contradicts his own opinions in the lawsuit.
In a court document filed Friday the defendants say Dr. Robert Lustig has long believed that sugar in all of its forms is unhealthy but that he is now claiming high fructose corn syrup is the sole cause of diabetes.
The attorney representing the family tells 2 On Your Side the doctor believes high fructose corn syrup is a "substantial factor" in the girl developing diabetes and calls this an attack on his character.
