ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - This time last week Thad Lewis was on the Buffalo Bills' practice squad, today he came within a field goal of engineering a big upset win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Lewis, who only has one other NFL start under his belt, played well enough to win. He went 19/32 for 216 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Lewis also ran for the Bills first touchdown. However, he also held the ball too long on several occasions and rushed a number of passes, making it more difficult on his receivers. Lewis' biggest mistake was a third quarter fumble in which he faked a shovel pass, and then failed to tuck the ball before he was hit.
Lewis threw a 22 yard touchdown pass to Scott Chandler and a 40 yard strike to Marquis Goodwin to tie the game late in the fourth quarter.
"I think we did okay, but you have to come away with a W" said Lewis after the game.
Coach Doug Marrone said he gives his young quarterback high marks.
"Overall, I was happy except for the turnover. I think he was trying to do too much," said Marrone. He also said that receivers failed to make catches that would have put the Bills in a better position to win.
Lewis left the field in a boot and had his left foot x-rayed but says he'll be fine.
