NIAGARA FALLS, NY -  Members of the 107th Air National Guard Airlift Wing stationed at the Niagara Falls Air Force Base are in the New York City area helping in Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

A spokesperson for the base tells 2 On Your Side that as of Wednesday night, the group had left the Lexington Armory to help evacuate patients from Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan.

CNN is reporting that national guard troops lined the stairwells of the hospital to usher out more than 700 patients after Sandy knocked out the hospital's power and flooding wiped out basement fuel pumps, which power its generators.

Troops literally carried some patients down more than a dozen flights of stairs to get them out. The soldiers called themselves, quote, "a human bucket brigade."

On Tuesday afternoon, members of the 107th deployed to the disaster area. The service members have a lot of disaster relief experience. Last year, they assisted in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene and the unit also responded to the horrific events in New York City on 9/11.
