BUFFALO, NY -- The New York State Police have now made available the so-called opt - out forms which allow holders of pistol permits in the state to keep their information private. This is part of the state's controversial new SAFE Act gun legislation.

Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs says over four thousand people have so far requested the forms from his office in person, through the phone, or on - line. This follows the previous publication of names and addresses of permit holders and similar information in some counties in downstate New York after a reporter sought it through a Freedom of Information Act request.

The forms allow permit holders to keep their information private for various reasons. They list options for active or retired law enforcement or corrections officers, people who have an order of protection, those in witness protection or serving as witnesses in criminal trials, or jurors in such cases. They also allow opt out for anyone who fears their life or their relatives will be endangered and for anyone who feels they will be subject to harassment upon disclosure of their information.

Jacobs says pistol permit holders have 60 days to fill out the form and return them via mail or fax to the clerk's office or whatever agency in their area handles pistol permits. They can request a copy of the form at http://www.erie.gov/optout.

They are available at the Clerk's Pistol Permit Office at 92 Franklin Street in Buffalo. They can also be obtained at all Erie County Auto Bureaus as of Tuesday, February 19th.
