3 Killed in Thruway Accident, Including 1-Month-Old Baby

SILVER CREEK, NY - An accident has closed a section of the eastbound Thruway that runs through Chautauqua and Erie counties.

State Police have confirmed three people are dead and several hurt. It happened when a passenger van apparently drifted off the road and struck a Thruway dump truck that was parked in the median.

They accident victims were coming home from a road trip to Florida.

Troopers say two adults, the male driver Luis A. Arroyo, 27,  and front seat female passenger Christieann L. Gonzalez,29,  died, as well as a one-month-old baby Luis A. Arroyo Jr.

Another injured adult, 24 year old Jessica Gonzalez, remains at ECMC in serious condition, after undergoing surgery there

Troopers on the scene say there were three adults and seven children in the van. 

The six children who survived the crash ranged in ages from 2-13 years, and are all at Buffalo Women And Children's Hospital 

Dr. Kathryn Bass , Director of Pediatric Trauma, operated on one of the victims (a 13-year-old girl) who sustained severe lacerations, and is now on life support, but expected to make it.

She also says there are two additional victims in critical condition and on life support, ages six and eight.  

"They are sedated, they are unconscious, they are on ventilators for breathing right now," she said.

There were no new updates on the children's conditions as of Friday evening.

The children are identified by State Police as:

Alexis Rodriguez Jr., 10

Alexandra Rodriguez, 13

A state thruway worker was also injured, suffering a wrist injury.  That person is expected to be ok.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office tells 2 on Your Side that four air ambulances were dispatched to the scene to handle the transport of patients. That included a helicopter called in from Pennsylvania.  

Some patients from the crash were also transported by ambulance to Lakeshore Hospital for treatment.

It was reported to authorities at 7:45 AM. Closed is the stretch of roadway between Exit 58 at Silver Creek and Exit 57A at Eden-Angola.
