WARSAW, NY - The Wyoming County Animal Shelter is putting out a call for emergency assistance after nearly 50 dogs were found abandoned and abused over the weekend.

The dogs, mostly pure and mixed breed Jack Russell Terriers and Chihuahuas, were found shoved into three separate crates in the Town of Middlebury.

Most are in poor health and in need of immediate medical attention. Problems range from heart murmurs, matted fur, bad teeth and mammary tumors.

The Wyoming County Animal Control Unit and Sheriff's Department rescued the dogs early Monday morning and Animal Control staff and volunteers have been caring for the animals ever since.

Justa Goodell, Wyoming County Animal Control Officer says there is an immediate need for donations and volunteers to help care for the dogs.

Items needed include:

  • -Rubber gloves
  • -Clorox
  • -Shampoo
  • -Towels
  • -Small breed dog food
  • -Wet dog food

Also needed are volunteers to help clean the animals and people to adopt them once they are healthy and cleared to go to new homes.

Donations can also be sent in care of the Wyoming County Animal Control at 4380 Rt. 19A, Silver Springs, NY 14550.
