INDIAN FALLS, N.Y. - Genesee County's rope rescue team pulled a 17-year old man from the Indian Falls gorge late Thursday night.

Matthew Kwiatkowski, 17, of West Seneca, was part of a larger group - of about three others - walking around the gorge when he fell 30 feet down, landing on rocks and injuring his back and neck. A second young man climbed down after him.

Authorities on the scene are unsure if the group were from out of town or were locals.

Fire, police and rescue crews responded to Gilmore Road in Corfu around 8:30 p.m. It took crews about two hours to pull the man from the gorge. The other man apparently was able to pull himself from the gorge and walk to safety.

Mercy Flight took Kwiatkowski to ECMC. Hospital officials say he is still being evaluated and a condition was not available.

Fire officials say the hardest part of rescuing the teen was getting to him, in the middle of the falls and harnessing him to a stretcher and not causing more pain.

The gorge is located beside Indian Falls Log Cabin Restaurant. Witnesses say that many people throughout the year go down into the water, even though there are signs that say no swimming.
