Accident on Kraus Road in Clarence, May 5, 2013.

CLARENCE -  The Harris Hill Volunteer Fire Company is mourning the loss of one of their own. Alexander E. Hemline, 17, of Clarence, lost his fight for life today.

Hemline had crashed his 1998 Jeep Cherokee head on into a tree while traveling northbound on Kraus Road in the Town of Clarence Sunday morning. The accident happened at about 9:45 a.m., according to the Erie County Sherrif's Office.

Hemline was the only person in the vehicle, and he was wearing a safety belt. He was unconscious when an Erie County Sherriff's deputy arrived on the scene.

A small fire had erupted in the engine compartment, which the deputy extinguished. Rescue crews had to cut the roof from the car to extricate the teen from the badly damaged vehicle.

He was transported to ECMC by Mercy Flight, and was listed in critical condition throughout the day.

Hemilne was a "junior firefighter" in the Harris Hill Volunteer Fire Company. The fire company announced his passing on their Faceboook page late Sunday afternoon.
