DENVER (AP / wgrz.com) - The Colorado Avalanche have introduced Patrick Roy as their new coach as they turn to the Hall of Fame goalie to revive a franchise he once led to prominence.

Roy met the media for the first time on Tuesday since reaching a deal last week. In addition to coaching, he will also serve as vice president of hockey operations.

The 47-year-old Roy joins forces with former teammate-turned-executive Joe Sakic to fix a squad that's missed the playoffs three straight seasons. Roy and Sakic helped the Avs to Stanley Cup titles in 1996 and 2001.

Roy has stayed busy since his retirement a decade ago. He's operated as coach and general manager for the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League over the last eight seasons.

Among the things Roy mentioned on Tuesday, that the Avalanche should be open to trading the top overall pick in the draft.  Sabres GM Darcy Regier has been very open about the fact the Sabres are looking to move up from the 8th spot they currently hold.

How realistic is a trade?  Adam Benigni spoke with Rod Mackey of KUSA-TV Sports in Denver.
