BUFFALO, NY - The sun was shining as Shakespeare in Delaware Park kicked off its 38th season.

Hamlet opened tonight and runs until July 14th. Then from July 25th - August 18th will be the comedy Measure For Measure.

All performances are Tuesday - Sunday and begin at 7:30 p.m. on the hill by the Delaware Park Rose garden and Marcy Casino.

Founder and Artistic Director Saul Elkin says they've performed Hamlet several times before, and this year the style returns to the way it would have been seen in Shakespeare's time. "We've done Hamlet in a variety of styles. This year, we're doing it in the style which is sort of close to the style which it was performed in his own time. We've set it in the Renaissance which was the 17th century."

Elkin also says, "Although it is Shakespeare, and daunting, and people worry about the language, one of the things we try to do is make the plays absolutely crystal clear as we can. We try to tell the stories clearly. We don't change the language, we don't dumb things down, but we try to make the actions very, very, very clear.

"It really is a communal event that happens here. Somebody once said that Shakespeare in the park is like a huge community picnic where a play happens to be going on. But it's more than that. It's an opportunity for people who don't normally go to the theater, maybe because it's unaffordable, maybe because it's not a part of their lives, but we welcome them here with open arms. They can come once, they can come twice, they can come over and over again."
