BUFFALO, NY - Erie County Democratic Chair Jeremy Zellner has asked local attorney and long-time public policy advocate Kevin Gaughan to enter the race for Erie County Comptroller. Lynn M. Szalkowski, the Dems' endorsed candidate, formally withdrew from the race on Friday due to health reasons.

Gaughan told 2 On Your Side late Saturday he is undecided as to whether he will accept the party's nomination.

"Most people in Erie County know Kevin Gaughan, and his record of independence and advocacy on behalf of hardworking taxpayers," said Zellner in a prepared statement. "Kevin has unquestionable integrity, and a deep commitment to our community. There could not be a better taxpayer watchdog than Kevin, who has already saved local taxpayers more than $5.2 million per year without having served a single day in public office."

If Gaughan chooses to accept the nomination, he'll face current Erie County Comptroller Stefan Mychajliw in the general election. "I look forward to a spirited campaign," said Mychajliw on Saturday. "We're going to run a positive campaign  letting people know that I'm their independent watchdog and I have a strong record at fighting for them and fighting politicians. I don't know much about my potential opponent and that's why no matter who it is we're going to focus on our record."
