TONAWANDA, NY - Boaters in the Niagara River had to abandon ship when their boat started smoking this afternoon just offshore from Niawanda Park.

Luckily, they were able to swim to a nearby boat that took them to shore. A dispatcher from the Erie County Sheriff's Office says their vessel drifted onto the rocks and had to be removed by a towing agency.

The Coast Guard and Tonawanda Police Department were also on hand to help out.
