WILLIAMSVILLE, NY-- Amherst Police are investigating the deaths of an elderly couple in Amherst.
Police were called to a home on Dawnbrook Lane Friday morning. Police are currently investigating this as a murder/suicide.
Police say the wife, whose body was found in the house, was in failing health and that may be a possible motive in the shooting.
The husband's body was found in the garage. They were found by a caregiver who showed up around 8 a.m. to provide a ride.
Investigators say a sawed-off rifle was used.
The couple's names are not being released at this time.
Neighbor Deborah Lewis is surprised something like this happened on her street. Lewis moved into her Dawnbrook Lane home in Amherst about two years ago.
Friday morning, she knew something was wrong when Amherst police cars lined both sides of the street.
"We had heard no sirens. We had not heard anything. I short time later, a neighbor called me and had said the police had been to her door asking about the people across the street," said Lewis. "We didn't really know them. We didn't get a chance to meet them. It's really quite shocking."
Lewis says the neighbors try to keep an eye on each other and usually can tell if something is wrong.
"Never seen anything out of the ordinary in this neighborhood. It's always just been very mellow, very pleasant, very laid back. Comfortable. It's one of the best suburban neighborhoods I think I've ever lived in," says Lewis.
Amherst police have declined our request for an on camera interview.
