NIAGARA FALLS, NY - The United States Air Force is ordering all 914th Airlift Wing Department of Defense civilian employees to "resume their normal work schedule" on Monday, October 7.

About 1,500 New York National Guard civilian technicians from around the state, including some 430 from Niagara Falls, were furloughed on Tuesday due to the federal government shutdown drama that is playing out in Washington, D.C.

On Saturday, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced that most of the Pentagon's 400,000 furloughed employees would be back at work as early as next week.

Hagel issued the return-to-work order Saturday under a new interpretation of the Pay Our Military Act.

Congress and President Obama passed the act just before the government shutdown began on Tuesday. It allowed active-duty military to continue to be paid.

On Saturday, Hagel announced the Department of Defense had reconsidered what that law covered and decided that most of its civilian employees were covered as well.
