EDEN, NY - A woman riding a horse on Route 75 in the Town of Eden was struck and killed by a farm truck at 6:41 a.m. Saturday morning, according to Town of Eden Police Department Lieutenant John H. McCarthy.
Kathryn M. Tyrrell, 49, was hit from behind on Route 75 (Sisson Highway) south of East Church Street about half-an-hour before sunrise. The driver of the farm truck, who was hauling silage at the time, says he saw "something brown at the last minute" on the right side of the lane he was in, but too late to avoid the collision, according to McCarthy.
There is a blind curve in the road where the collision happened.
Neither Tyrrell nor the horse was wearing reflective material. McCarthy said it also appears that Tyrrell was wearing ear buds and drinking a beer when the accident happened.
Another motorist told police that he had to take evasive action to avoid hitting a horse and rider about an hour before the accident, on Route 75 but closer to Route 62.
Tyrrell was pronounced dead at the scene. The horse died a short time later.
The road was closed for about five hours while police investigated the scene. No charges have been filed against the driver at this time.
