UB interim athletic director John Lambert
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - John Lambert has been named the University at Buffalo's interim athletic director while the school launches a search to replace Warde Manuel, who is leaving to take over at Connecticut.
University president Satish Tripathi announced the decision Thursday, four days after Manuel informed the school of his decision to accept the AD's job at UConn.
"I would like to thank President Satish Tripathi and the senior leadership team at the University at Buffalo for having the confidence in me to lead the Division through this very exciting period of our growth," said Lambert in a statement released by the school. "I am honored that the President has afforded me this opportunity and am fortunate to work with some of the best athletic administrators, coaches and student athletes in the country. This assembled team of individuals will help to cooperatively move our division forward during this transition."
Lambert has been at Buffalo since 1996, and currently holds the title of senior associate athletic director. Lambert helped oversee Buffalo's jump to the Division I-A level in the late 1990s, when it joined the Mid-American Conference.
Buffalo intends to formally launch a national search next week to find Manuel's successor. Tripathi expects a new athletic director to be hired within three months.
