Charleston, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - Derrick Gordon led six Massachusetts
players in double figures with 20 points, and the Minutemen topped the
Nebraska Cornhuskers 96-90 in the opener of the Charleston Classic.
All five UMass starters scored at least 10 points, including 16 from Sampson
Cady Lalanne had 15 points and nine rebounds for the Minutemen (4-0), who will
play the winner between No. 19 New Mexico and UAB in Friday's semifinals.
Maxie Esho contributed 13 points off the bench, Raphiael Putney posted 12 and
Chaz Williams scored 10.
Terran Petteway paced Nebraska (3-1) with a career-high 28 points. Tai
Webster, Leslee Smith and David Rivers each supplied 12 points in the loss.
The Cornhuskers closed to within 93-90 on a Webster layup with 30 seconds
remaining. Webster then stole the ball from Carter, but Rivers missed a layup
and Mike Peltz couldn't convert the putback.
Gordon was fouled after grabbing the rebound and made 1-of-2 free throws.
Nebraska fouled again after Shavon Shields missed a three-pointer and Williams
sealed the win at the charity stripe.
