Cooperstown, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Greg Maddux and Tony LaRussa will be
inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame this summer without a logo on
The Hall of Fame announced the cap selections that will appear on the plaques
for the six members of the class of 2014 on Thursday, with both Maddux and
LaRussa feeling it was best to not choose one city over another.
Maddux played 23 seasons in the majors -- 11 with the Atlanta Braves, 10 with
the Chicago Cubs, two with the Los Angeles Dodgers and two with the San Diego
He is best known for his time with the Braves and Cubs. He recorded 194 of his
355 career wins with the Braves and 133 with the Cubs. He was also the
National League Cy Young winner four times with the Braves and once with the
"My wife Kathy and I grew up in baseball in Chicago, and then we had just an
amazing experience in Atlanta with the Braves," said Maddux in a statement
released by the Hall of Fame. "It's impossible for me to choose one of those
teams for my Hall of Fame plaque, as the fans of both clubs in each of those
cities were so wonderful. I can't think of having my Hall of Fame induction
without support of both of those fan bases, so, for that reason, the cap on my
Hall of Fame plaque will not feature a logo."
LaRussa could've chosen the Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics and St. Louis
Cardinals. He won one World Series title with the A's and two with the
"The Chicago White Sox gave me my start in the game as a big league manager
for my first eight seasons in my 33-year managerial career," said LaRussa. "In
Oakland, we recorded four first-place finishes in 10 years, winning three
pennants and a World Series. And in St. Louis, our clubs won three pennants
and two titles in 16 years. It's the totality of the success of each of those
three teams that led me to Cooperstown, so I am choosing to not feature a logo
so that fans of all clubs can celebrate this honor with me."
LaRussa and Maddux aren't the only players to be in the Hall without a logo on
their cap. Catfish Hunter, Andy Cooper, Frank Grant, Pete Hill, Biz Mackey,
Luis Santop, Ben Taylor and Cristobal Torriente all don't have team logos on
The remaining members of the class of 2014, Bobby Cox, Joe Torre, Tom Glavine
and Frank Thomas, all selected caps.
Cox will enter as an Atlanta Brave, Torre as a New York Yankee, Glavine as a
Brave and Thomas as a White Sox.
Enshrinement will take place in Cooperstown, N.Y. on July 27.
