FREDONIA, N.Y. -- A 21-year-old Fredonia student died unexpectedly Saturday morning inside his dorm room while playing video games with a friend, according to a release from the University.
Thomas Dean was from Newfane and was a senior studying English with a creative writing minor.
President Virginia Schaefer Horvath said, "Our deepest sympathies are extended to the family and friends of Mr. Dean, and to all of his fellow students, faculty and staff who are filled with grief and shock."
His sister Katie gathered with some close friends on Saturday afternoon. They told us that Thom was a unique individual, always speaking his mind, and the glue that held their circle of friends together.
Katie told us, "He really taught me to be myself no matter what, and just to follow my dreams no matter what, and do what you love to do ... just live life to the fullest."
The university statement said Dean was a student ambassador with the International Education Office and a member of the Korean International Student Society.
Counseling services are available to students, especially those who live in the University Commons, which is where Dean lived.
President Horvath said the cause of death is unknown, pending results of an autopsy. She said no foul play is suspected.
