compared to people living in similar countries, Americans die sooner and have higher rates of disease.

a new report from the institute of medicine finds this health disparity occurs across the life span -- from birth through age 75.

even americans with health insurance, higher incomes and college educations seem to be at a disadvantage compared to those in western europe, australia, canada and japan.

the report indicates the u-s lags behind those countries in infant mortality, injuries and homicides, teenage pregnancies, hiv-infections, obesity, heart disease and disability.
