BUFFALO, NY - Congressman Chris Lee (R- Clarence) resigned his seat Wednesday afternoon after shirtless photos of him surfaced on the website gawker.com.
Lee issued a statement that, in part, reads: "It has been a tremendous honor to serve the people of Western New York. I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents. I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all. I have made profound mistakes and I promise to work as hard as I can to seek their forgiveness. "
Gawker posted a photo of a shirtless Rep. Chris Lee on Wednesday claiming the Western New York congressman sent the picture to a woman who posted an ad on craigslist.
Lee responded to a post in the "Women Seeking Men" section of craigslist, according to the article by reporter Maureen O'Connor.
O'Connor reports the original craigslist ad was posted on the morning of Friday, January 14th. It asked the question -- "Will someone prove to me not all CL men look like toads?" Gawker reports Lee responded to the post later in the afternoon with a picture of him shirtless, in front of a mirror. Lee used a gmail account confirmed to be his own by Gawker.
Rep. Lee was on Capitol Hill Wednesday afternoon, where Congress is in session. Reporters on Capitol Hill were told that Lee left around 3 p.m. According to Fox News, Lee told them he is not willing to talk and that he has to discuss things with wife.
