WASHINGTON - The three House members from New York who lost in Tuesday's election were all women serving their first term.

Democratic Rep. Kathy Hochul of Erie County and Republican Reps. Nan Hayworth of Westchester County and Ann Marie Buerkle of the Syracuse area also were among eight House members targeted by the opposing political party as top targets in the state.

Hochul and Buerkle were identified months ago as the most vulnerable members of the New York delegation because redistricting favored the opposing party.

And Democrats considered Hayworth the second-most vulnerable Republican in the delegation.

The delegation saw a net loss of only two women because state Assemblywoman Grace Meng won an open seat in Queens.

A fourth woman who was among the top targets around the state - veteran Democratic Rep. Louise Slaughter of the Rochester area - won decisively Tuesday with 57 percent of the vote. Slaughter ran against another woman, Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks, who received 43 percent.
