BUFFALO, N.Y. - Thursday night marked a somber anniversary for the Buffalo Fire Department.
29 years ago, five of Buffalo's Bravest gave their lives in a propane explosion that leveled a city block.
Each year on December 27, the Buffalo Fire Department radios out a special message in honor of firefighters Michael Austin, Michael Catanzaro, James Lickfeld, Anthony Waszkielewicz, and Matthew Colpoys.
There was also a moment of silence Thursday night in memory of all firefighters who have died in the line of duty.
The five men, along with two neighbors, died when the explosion happened inside a warehouse on North Division Street. It was caused when a propane tank that was being moved fell and hit a stove.
The propane tank exploded as firefighters entered the building.
