New Rule on TV Commercial Volume

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- For years, many of you have complained about loud commercials on television.

But now a new Federal Communications Commission rule has kicked in requiring commercials to have the same average volume as the programs they're in.

We have heard from a few viewers concerned that commercials, like one from a well known local car salesman, might be violating the rules.  WGRZ has equipment in place to monitor and correct any ads that are in violation.

"Some commercials may appear to be louder though they may be in legal compliance, and this is due to the amount of information that's put into the signal path.  Look at the audio as an envelope.  Sometimes the envelope can be stuffed, other times the envelope can only have a few pieces of paper in it, and some seem to be fuller and louder, even though they're in the same size envelope," said WGRZ Assistant Chief Engineer Scott Semson.
