As we ring in the new year on Tuesday, here's a look back at 2012's top weather records and events for Western New York.

Top weather records for the year started with a continuing warm trend in January. Winter was the 4th warmest on record in Buffalo in 140 years.

The warmth continued for several months with March being the warmest on record and Lake Erie's water temperature also reaching a record high temperature. May finished as the second warmest which lead to the warmest Buffalo Spring on record.

Dry conditions persisted and much of Western New York was in a moderate drought by summer. It was the 3rd driest summer on record.

The very warm months in 2012 has caused this year to be the warmest on record since 1871.

Top weather events of 2012 started with a damaging wind event in the middle of January when Buffalo received wind gusts up to 67mph.  End of May brought damaging winds and hail. Then strong winds from a microburst in Buffalo caused damage to two buildings on September 8th.

The remnants of Hurricane Sandy moved through during end of October bringing damaging winds to some spots in Western New York and much needed rain, but minimal damage when compared to the major damage suffered along the coast.

Finally a winter storm dropped a foot on many spots in Western New York the last week of December.

Precipitation totals for the entire year were about 8 inches (liquid equivalent rain and snow) below average.
